Replacement Furniture Spindles

Replacement Furniture Spindles

From Spindlewood Woodturning

Spindlewood provides replacement furniture spindles as part of our professional woodturning services.  We work with a host of companies to manufacture new furniture spindles and to assist in restoration projects.

Our customers typically include architects, property developers, restoration firms, furniture companies, boat builders, and homeowners extending or renovating the property. (or in some instances people who simply wish to repair broken spindles or other wood-turned items).

We manufacture a range of spindles, not just staircase spindles, we also manufacture furniture woodturnings, including chair spindles, wooden table legs, wooden decorative bed head spindles, posts, and columns, for internal furniture and garden structures.

We manufacture a range of woodturnings for boat builders, including masts, handles, guide rails, steering wheels and handrails.

Often we are provided with samples to restore or architects drawings to work from, we are comfortable using most types of wood. We do not have a minimum order quantity and we do offer a full range of wood turning services which includes manufacturing custom furniture spindles and components, items such as handles chair legs, table legs, stretchers, cupboard handles, cabinet handles, door knobs, turned finials, newels and handrails.  We are happy to create furniture woodturning in a range of styles including modern or contemporary.

Chair Legs and Chair Spindlesfurniture spindles

Two of our most popular replacement furniture woodturnings include chair legs and chair spindles. Often we are provided with unbroken items and asked to reproduce. Unfortunately, not all spindles have been produced as an exact match in the past and there is sometimes a variance in the items we are asked to copy.

We were recently asked to replace several hundred furniture spindles, for a restaurant’s damaged chairs and tables. The restaurant wanted to replace some broken parts whilst maintaining consistency with the items being used in the service.  We were given sample tables and chairs and dure to the minor differences we agreed a standard specification for all components. Chair legs, chair spindles, and table legs.   Using modern woodturning techniques and experience we are now able to make an exact match for each component. The customer was so pleased with the delivered items that we have been asked to provide similar repairs for other restaurants within the chain.

Furniture Spindles & Furniture Woodturning

It is commonly known that in the main, mass-produced wooden furniture is cheaply available, however spare parts, replacements and components such as legs, spindles and turned wood is not so easily available and more often than not will require the intervention of a custom furniture spindles specialist such as Spindlewood Woodturning.  We produce legs, handles, spindles, short legs (for sofas), drawer pulls, finals and any turned wooden item for furniture.

Furniture Spindles for Restoration

The first challenge in furniture restoration is fining a component to match, either a similar item or a drawing.  From which we can produce a template.  The next issue is knowing which tools to use in which sequence and the third issue is to define the wood, finish, and any attached components such as fixings, boots and protectors. At Spindlewood we are regularly asked to restore furniture and antiques, as well as manufacture components for commissioned furniture items.

Wooden Spindles

Wooden Spindles

What are Wooden Spindles and why are they important

Some people refer to Spindles as the Baluster, which is the term mostly used in North America to describe the item in the UK commonly referred to as aspindles Spindle.

Spindles are the decorative uprights that run between the handrail and the base rail or the tread of the step. They are designed to stop objects and people from falling off the stairs below the handrail. Spindles are not structural support.

They do not hold the handrail up; the structural support for the handrail is provided by the newel posts, the main purpose of the uprights is to prevent harm, by restricting people and objects falling off the stairs.

Transform Your Home with Decorative Spindles

Swapping out your stair parts can transform your staircase, landing, and hallway. Also if you are extending your home to create a new cellar or loft conversion it’s important to have matching staircases throughout the home as your stair case is a key feature.

Here at Spindlewood, much of our work is restoring existing spindles that have become damaged and turning new stair parts to match existing staircases, new structures, extensions, and extended living space.

When restoring, replacing, or creating new stair parts your goal may be to create a design suited to your needs and one that adds value to your home.

Why Spindlewood for Custom Stair Parts

spindles, spindleOur staircase components and stair parts are oftern described as the best on the market. All staircases in your home can benefit from Spindlewood staircase parts. Spindles are an integral part of a balustrade, holding the handrail firmly in place to make a stairway safer and easier to use. They are also used to prevent trips and falls when climbing or descending a stair making them a sound choice for every stage of life.

With a variety of custom designs available, these spindles can fit any kind of interior design. Spindlewood creates custom designs, restorations and we turn wood from drawings and items requiring restoration. We create Spindles, in various formats including, classical, traditional, modern and contemporary.

Most of our designs are made of hardwood and many of our customers prefer a stained wood finish to paint.

Stair Parts For the Trade

Spindlewood offers an extensive woodturning service to create custom solutions for the trade, our service lines include stair parts, furniture, restorations and leisure items such as boat masts and steering.  Spindlewood offers solutions to the trade, including designers, architects and builders or developers.  We manufacture these spindles in the UK and we ship to your premises or site.

Spindles (aka balusters) are the thin supports between the base rail or tread of the step and the handrail. As we have mentioned before, they are not structural and do not hold up the handrail, but will offer a little support and they are to stop people falling through the gap below the handrail.

Spindles are typically wood and they are turned on a lathe to achieve perfectly round cuts on. These can get fairly ornate depending on the style you are trying to achieve and your budget.

Typically our spindles are custom made to your precise specification, design, style, wood type and size. Typically spindles tend to be between 32mm and 41mm wide, but again can be made outside these sizes.

There is an enormous range of styles available when it comes to choosing the right spindles for your stairs. Typically the biggest choice that you will have is the Turn and the material that you are going to use.

Wooden Spindles

As they are so simple to make and efficient, they are usually the most popular. There is an enormous variety of wooden spindles to choose from, as well. For example:

  • Type of wood – The most common design choices are Oak and Ash with most people preferring to paint Pine. You can find wood that you like by shopping around, but there are a great many different kinds that are used.
  • Design – At the simplest, wooden spindles can be square and upright, but even these can be enhanced with chamfers. When Designing new, restoring existing or replacing broken or damaged spindles, use a design in keeping with the home style, be that Modern, traditional, contemporary or elegant.  Spindlewood are happy to discuss your sterling choices.   Turned spindles can vary considerably from the delicate Edwardian styles to the heavier traditional styles and the Victorian styles. At the most complex, there are twisted spindles, which are also known as barley twist spindles. Fluting can also be added to the turned spindles. Flutes are grooves that are routed into the spindle for decorative purposes.
  • Finish – The spindles can be painted or the wood left exposed. Polishing or varnishing are beautiful options to bring out the wood grain.

In addition to manufacturing and supplying oak spindles, oak handrails, and oak base rails, Spindlewood also manufactures and supplies oak newel posts, caps, and spindles to the trade. The materials utilized in the construction of stair parts are both top quality and affordable. Our oak and other wood-turned staircase parts come in a wide range of designs and materials, so you are able to mix and match to transform your living space.
