Columns & Large Turnings
A column is usually a cylindrical structural element that supports the weight of the structure above such as a roof. There designs have evolved from ancient Greece and before through the years from simple support elements to a highly decorative and engineered piece.
We do produce regular quantities of large cylindrical turnings, they are usually turned from glulam timber which is a factory produced laminated softwood. These turned pillars are usually used in contempory architectural projects.
Our particular speciality is the manufacture and turning of extremely large columns and pillars, mainly linked to the construction industry, architectural restoration and garden design.
These large turnings have been made on our specially adapted lathe which has 6m between centres and a 600mm diameter capacity.
Shown here are some examples of the work we have produced over the last few years.
